George Clooney – Michael Clayton
Daniel Day-Lewis – There Will Be Blood
Johnny Depp – Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Tommy Lee Jones – In The Valley of Elah
Viggo Mortensen – Eastern Promises
Who Will Win? Daniel Day-Lewis if the Academy has any sense. The film itself wasn’t my favorite, but it was impressive. And most of that impressiveness was carried on the strong shoulders of Mr. Day-Lewis. I think popular opinion agrees with me.
Who Should Win? Viggo and Clooney both did excellent work and I wouldn’t begrudge them the trophy one bit. I didn’t see Elah (but enjoyed Jones quite a bit in No Country), so I can’t comment. I love Johnny Depp like any good lesbian and while he’s completely competent in what could have been a train wreck role, I think the other contenders in this talent pool are stronger with Daniel on top.

It Would Be Totally Bad Ass If: Viggo Mortensen won for Eastern Promises. It would be a shame if wrestling a guy to death, nude in a bathhouse, was for nothing. Plus, he really had every mannerism down pat. And he has love for Dennis Kucinich–so talent aside, he’s also got that working for him.
